Hughes 500 Crash In Korea Kills Two
A South Korean Army Hughes 500D crashed Wednesday night killing the two people on board. Reports are that it was an instrument training flight that started around 7:10 p.m. from the Deokso base in Namyangju. They made two landings and during the third flight it crashed due to unknown circumstances around 8:30 p.m. in a farm’s field. The two pilots on board were both warrant officers in the Army. A military officer said that weather didn’t appear to be a factor.
Information suggests that the helicopter was built in 1978 and has been in service with the Korean Army ever since then. It belonged to the 109th Aviation Unit and is part of a fleet of around 140 500s in use by the Army. Between 1976 and 1988, over 300 of this model of helicopter were sent to Korea with a mix of utility and attack configurations.
